James Howell FREEMAN - b. Apr. 8, 1820, TN; d. Aug.
25, 1892, Pike Co., IL; bur. there in Hornback
Cemetery. Son of William R.
FREEMAN and Mary MASSIE. James' birth and marriage date are
recorded in his brother George's Family Bible. His grave marker
gives his are at death as 72 years 4 months 15 days. The 1850
census of Pike Co., IL, Sep. 19, 1850, gives his age as 30
and occupation as grocery keeper. The 1870
census of El Dara, IL, Jun. 25, 1870, indicates he was using
the name Howell, was age 50, employed as a carpenter, unmarried,
and had his three youngest sons living with him. A double wedding
of bothers and sisters, John HAZELRIGG and Frances FREEMAN, and
James FREEMAN and Lucy HAZELRIGG, was held on Jul. 28, 1842, in
Pike Co., IL. As yet unconfirmed, it is reported that James was
married second on Dec. 2, 1866 in Pike Co., IL to Patsy A. WASSELL,
and third on Jun. 18, 1874 in Pike Co., IL to Deborah MINER.

birth as 1862). His father, wife, daughter Eva, and Nettie's
daughter Ruth are also buried in the Hornback Cemetery. John's
widow married second William COULTER, and had children Olive
Ann, Ruth Elizabeth, and Reuben. The Pike County History
includes the following.
"Hannah Manetta (Nettie) Hornback, a former well-known Pike
county school teacher, was born in Derry township May 3, 1867
<d. Feb. 12, 1909>. On July 13, 1884 she married John H.

Scott Cyrus FREEMAN - b. Feb. 23, 1848, Pike Co., IL;
d. Mar. 21, 1920, Muskogee, Muskogee Co., OK; bur. there in Greenhill Cemetery [photo] (block 30 lot 28).
Son of James Howell FREEMAN and Lucy Jane
HAZELRIGG. The cemetery records and death certificate give
cause of Cyrus' death as TB. He lived also at Nevada, Vernon Co.,
MO, and worked as a carpenter. The Freeman family was enumerated
twice in the 1880 census
of Vernon Co., MO, once on Saturday, June 12th, and again
on Monday, June 14th. There are interesting differences in the
two listing, suggesting that Scott provided the details on the
12th, and Malinda provided them on the 14th. A notice in the Nevada
Daily Mail, Jul. 14, 1897 indicates the family left there
to live at Neosho, Newton Co., MO, having rented a hotel there.
By the time of the 1900
census of Muscogee, Indian Territory, they had moved there,
being enumerated as the household of Scott C. Freeman, Commercial
Traveler, wife Malinda M., and children Anna, Leland, Pansy, Ollie,
Nellie, and Melvin. In various locations, he is known as Cyrus
S., S. Cyrus, Scott C., S.C., and Silas FREEMAN. Among the homes
he built was that of his son-in-law and daughter, Ben and Lizzie
Marshall, at Broken Arrow, OK. Scott resided at Eldara, IL at
the time of his marriage. Married Nov. 3, 1870, Scott Co., IL
(License No. 3370), by Rev. John H. TAYLOR (Scott's uncle, by
marriage to aunt Millie Ann HAZELRIGG), with witnesses Maggie
HAMILTON and David HOLDER.

Malinda Margrett SEARS - b. Dec. 13, 1853, La Plata,
Macon Co., MO; d. Jan. 31, 1948, Chouteau, Mayes Co., OK; bur.
Feb. 4, 1948, Greenhill
Cemetery [photo],
Muskogee, Muskogee Co., OK. Her birth date is given as noted on
her death certificate and a notarized
statement she signed January 30, 1941, but her grave marker
indicates she lived 1854-1947, and the 1900
census indicates she was born in Oct. 1852. The same Census
states she was the mother of 10 children, 8 then living - probably
should have been 10 living children, 2 deceased. Malinda was living
at Winchester, IL at the time of her marriage. She was living
in Chouteau on Dec. 13, 1937, ('84 years old') with son Richard.
Daughter of Chesly SEARS and Elizabeth

- Lucy Jane - b. Sep. 12,
1871, Eldara, Pike Co., IL; d. May 13, 1951, Seattle, WA. Lucy
was first married on Apr. 10, 1890, Nevada, Vernon Co., MO, to
James T. GRAY, a railroad worker of Parsons, Labette Co., KS.
In History of Labette County, Kansas, by Nelson Case (Topeka:
1893), it is noted that a J. G. GRAY was a trustee of the Parsons
Building and Loan, and that C. M. FENTRISS signed a petition
to form Breese School District No. 25 on Feb. 15, 1869 (p. 196).
James T. GRAY, whose parents have not yet been identified,
was the father of Lucy's first child, Clyde Fentress LAWSON.
Since Clyde has always been known by the LAWSON surname, information
concerning him and his family is included in the LAWSON family
narrative. Family sources report that James and Lucy were separated
following a violent argument. The Nevada Daily Mail of
Aug. 14, 1893 gives the following (abstracted) information regarding
their divorce:
James T. Gray vs Lucy Gray - before marriage was Miss Lucy Freeman,
she is now living with her father, Silas<sic> Freeman at
Muskogee, Indian Territory. Petition alleges desertion: they
were married in 1890 and in Nov. 1891, while husband was away
from home, she sent word for him not to come home. When he did
return, she refused to let him see their child and refused to
live with him.
The uncontested divorce decree was granted on the grounds of
desertion on Dec. 6, 1893 at Nevada, MO. Lucy married second
James Martin LAWSON.
- Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Belle - b. Jan. 6, 1874, Nevada, Vernon
Co., MO; d. Jul. 10, 1910 in OK. Married Benjamin B. MARSHALL
(b. Feb. 13, 1866; d. Aug. 8, 1940), and they were living at
Clarkesville, IT in May 1897. Their daughter Miss Ruth MARSHALL,
student was living at the home of Benjamin and his second wife
in 1916 (Muskogee City Directory). Lizzie's death date, as noted
above, is from a Family Record prepared by sister Lucy Jane while
their mother was still living. However, the postcard quoted below
indicates that Lizzie's husband Benjamin Marshall married her
sister Anna on Oct. 21, 1908. It appears that the Family Record
entry is in error. Children of Lizzie and Benjamin MARSHALL:
Elizabeth married Mr. HOLSEY; Ruth; Benjamin, Jr. married; George;
Gertrude; Beauregard married; and Haskell.
- Charles Albert - b. Jan. 18, 1876, Nevada, Vernon Co., MO;
d. Feb. 29, 1936, probably in OK. The Polk's Business Directory
of 1901-2 for Muskogee, OK, lists the Roessler-Freeman Shoe Co.,
Julius ROESSLER, president, and Charles A. FREEMAN, treasurer.
The 1903 Muskogee City Directory as Chas (wf Augusta B), mgr
Roessler-Freeman Shoe Co, res 509 W Court. The only other Freemans
in the 1903 directory are his parents, sister Anna, and brother
Leland.
- Anna May - b. Sep. 15, 1878, Nevada, Vernon Co., MO; d. Sep.
