Chapter Fifteen
The Matthew Sims Family
of Alabama - Tennessee - Illinois
I-Pariss Sims, 1750-1833.
II-6. Matthew Sims, fourth son and sixth child of Pariss and Keziah Royster Sims, was horn near Winston-Salem, N. C., in l792-see Chapter Three. He was a circuit-riding Methodist minister and farmer in the Florence-Tuscumbia area of Alabama, where he married -- name of wife unknown-and had three children of which we have a record.
About 1828 he emigrated from Alabama, with his family and several other families, to Fayette County, Tenn., where they purchased a large block of land for settlement. In 1952 Leslie Sims, a great grandson of Alamo, Tenn., gave me the following information on his branch of the family:
"My father's name was John Sims. He had three brothers, James, William and Robert, and all of them, including my father, were doctors. They had one sister, Susie, who never married. My grandfather, William Sims, was a farmer and he had one older brother, Dr. John Sims, who lived in Lauderdale County, Tenn., near Double Bridges, where he was a country doctor. He had two sons, William and Edward.
"Dr. John Sims and my grandfather, William, had one sister, Martha who married Erastus White of Crockett County, Tenn. She was the grandmother of Dr. Robert H. White, Tennessee State Historian and the author of a State history, "Tennessee, It's Growth and Progress" which is used in the public schools of the State.
"I am almost sure that my great grandfather was Matthew Sims. I never heard my father say much about him for he died years before my father was born, but I understand he was a Methodist circuitriding preacher in North Alabama. He came to Fayette County, Tenn., about 1828 . . . . Robert W. Sims (12), the lawyer of Gadsden, Tenn., was a relative of ours (see Chapter Ten). I never knew him personally but my father did and I know that we are of the same family. Also father met Cong. Thetus W. Sims (160) several times and they figured out the family connection."
Leslie Sims has been editor and publisher of three weekly newspapers, known as "Sims Publications", Crockett County, for many years. In 1963 I spent some time with him in going over our family history. He has one son, Robert Bell Sims, who grew up in the newspaper plant of his father and is now Public Information Officer for the U. S. Navy in Washington, D. C.
Paul Sims, Leslie's younger brother, was editor of the States Graphic, Browasville, Tenn., until his death in 1962. Paul had one son, Paul Virgil, an engineer in Brownsville. In my work at the University of Tennessee I was closely associated with Paul for many years. He was an able leader and a power in the State Press Association, as expressed in the following resolution, issued by the Haywood County Court and printed in the Congressional Record at the request of Cong. Robert E. Everett:
"Whereas, the unexpected news of the untimely death of Paul Sims came as a distinct shock to the people throughout Haywood County and to his host of friends throughout the entire State .... for more than 40 years he had been associated with the States Graphic of Brownsville, having begun his connection there as a printer and over a period of years came to be elevated to vice-president and editor of the paper which enjoys an enviable reputation for its reporting of news and its splendid and thought provoking editorials . . . was a past president of the Tennessee Press Association and the Brownsville Rotary Club; past secretary of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce; a former member of the Board of Aldermen and Mayor of Brownsville; an Elder in the Church of Christ and a teacher of a Men's Bible Class; member of the Masonic Lodge; listed in the 1961 edition of "Who's Who in Tennessee", and a member of Council of Boy Scouts, all of which activities bespeak of his interest and efforts in the promotion of the religious and political life of his town and country . . . . Whereas, in the death of Paul Sims not only Brownsville, Haywood County and the State of Tennessee, but the Nation as a whole has lost one of its great benefactors and his influence will be felt and appreciated in years to come; now, therefore, be it resolved by the County Court of Haywood County in regular session that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the said Court . . . ."
The following record of the Matthews Sims family was compiled with the assistance of Leslie and Paul Sims, his great grandsons, and that of several descendants of Dr. James and Dr. Will Sims, most of whom now live in other states:
