THE ROBERT HENRY CLAY SIMS FAMILY
[photos from descendant Robert Dru Parker]

Robert Henry Clay Sims (22), third son of Matthew and Dorothy Greeson Sims, was born Nov. 15, 1844; died Dec. 14, 1927 at the old home place of his father on Dry Creek, which he owned for many years; now belongs to Eva Parker Nowlin, a granddaughter. He married Jemima Catherine (Cat) Copeland, a sister of my grandmother, Nancy Copeland Davis, Aug. 3, 1865. See Copeland Family, Chapter Seven.

Clay Sims, as he was called, was one of the most widely known and highly respected citizens of Wayne County, having served the County two terms as Trustee and three terms as County Judge. He was responsible for the establishment of the Sims, Tenn., post office and was the first postmaster.

He was conscripted into the Confederate Army in 1862 and was taken to Libby Prison at Richmond, Va., from which he escaped to join the Federal Army in the Shenandoah Valley in 1863. Later, he was in the Second Tennessee Regiment of mounted infantry, where he served until his discharge at Nashville, April 17, 1865.

When he was Trustee of Wayne County there were no banks in the county. Most of the people paid their taxes in cash and he had to look after the money personally until he could make a trip by horse-back, some 60 miles to Columbia, Tenn., where the nearest bank was located. In making these trips he had a guard with a shot gun accompany him, as well as being armed himself. Having no safe in his office, he took the county money home with him, to Dry Creek, each night in saddlebags. There he hid it in a hollow place behind a loose stone in the big fireplace, a sort of safety deposit box that had been provided by his father for storing money and other valuables.

More than once he drove would-be robbers from his place when given an alarm by a faithful dog he kept tied in the yard. Once, after a busy day collecting taxes, he put some $5000 in his saddlebags and left Waynesboro for home. In pitch darkness, he was riding down a deep hollow, a few miles from home when his horse stopped suddenly. He peered into the darkness and spotted something white, like the front of a man's shirt, in the bushes a few feet from the road. The white spot began to rise like a man straightening up from a squatting position. He grabbed the saddle bags and threw them as far as he could into the bushes, pulled his gun and was about to shoot when a white-faced cow made a noise, as she straightened to her feet.

In a cold sweat, he got off his horse and began to search in the darkness for the saddlebags only to find that he could not locate them. He had to ride a couple of miles to the nearest farm house to borrow a lantern. "After that, I bought a steel safe for the office," he told me years later. He was a Methodist, a Mason, and, for many years was a Sunday School superintendent. He had three daughters:
