SML Comment: Picture from Morgan Benson. MARY MORGAN. Born 19 October 1883 in Omaha, Nebraska. She married Eric St. Clair Purdon, son of Edward Sinclaire Purdon and Mary Boyd, on 24 June 1908 in Iloilo, Panay, Philippine Islands. He was born in Belfast, Ireland on 11 February 1881, and died in Manila, Philippine Islands, on 25 August 1914. Mary died on 20 January 1962, in Washington DC. They had two children:

i. Mary Brownson Purdon. Born 22 June 1909 in Iloilo, Panay, Philippine Islands. Affectionately known as "Polly" Purdon, she married Frederick Albert Gutheim (born 3 March 1908 in Cambridge, Mass.) on 8 June 1936. They lived in Washington, DC, and both are now deceased. "Fritz" Gutheim died on 2 October 1993 in Washington, DC. I have no date of death for Mary B. Purdon, except that she died about three years after her husband. They had one child.

ii. Eric Sinclaire Purdon. Born 25 October 1913 in Iloilo, Panay, Philippine Islands. A graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut (class of 1935), he married a woman named Mary (last name unknown), and was a writer of books. During World War II, he entered the Navy, and commanded a Subchaser, noted for its Black crew. He retired as a Commander, US Navy in 1964. His experiences during World War II resulted in a book, "Black Ship's Company, the story of PC 1294". He died on 1 December 1989, at his home in Annapolis, Maryland. They had three children.

She married Eric Sinclaire Purdon, son of Edward Sinclaire Purdon & Mary Boyd, on 24 Jun 1908 in Yloilo, Panay, Philippine Islands. Born Belfast, Ireland, on 11 Feb 1881. Died Manila, P. I., on 26 Aug 1914. Data from Mason.

Mr. Purdon graduated Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., 1935. He is a member of Alpha Delta Phi.

SML Comment: Picture from Morgan Benson. MARGUERITE MORGAN. Born 4 April 1885, at Fort Grant, Arizona Territory. She married 2LT Ralph Talbot, Jr on 19 June 1907 at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was born on 18 June 1884 at Denver, Colorado. 2LT Talbot was a graduate of the US Military Academy, West Point, Class of 1905. After a long and distinguished career, he retired as a Brigadier General in 1946. He died in Washington, DC on 18 April 1965. Marguerite Morgan Talbot died on 25 January 1954. They had two children:

i. Ralph Talbot III. Born 15 July 1912 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from the US Military Academy, class of 1933. After a long career, he retired as a Colonel, in 1963. He died at Letterman Army General Hospital on 2 October 1963. He married the former Dorothy Plant on 24 November 1934, and they had two children.

ii. Marguerite Lucy Talbot. She was born 3 August 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. Affectionately known as "Peggy Lou" she married Mr. Clair Beverley Mitchell. Nothing else is known about her.

SML Comment: LOUISE MORGAN. Born 11 November 1886, at Fort Davis, Texas. She died on 11 July 1915 at Tutuila, in American Samoa. She married Ensign Charles Churchill Slayton, son of George Albert Slayton and Mary Neilson, on 5 October 1910. Ensign Slayton was a graduate of the US Naval Academy, Class of 1906. Charles C. Slayton retired as a Captain, US Navy, in 1946. Charles C. Slayton was born on 17 April 1887 in Springfield, Ohio, and died on 5 March 1950 in Annapolis, Maryland. They had:

i. Morgan Slayton. Born 18 July 1911 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy, Class of 1933, and retired in 1963 as a Captain. He never married.

ii. Nancy Alton Slayton. Born 10 February 1913 at Annapolis, Maryland. She never married.

When married he was Ensign (now, 1935, Commander), U. S. N. Com. Slayton graduated U. S. Naval Academy, 1906.

Miss Slayton is a member of the D. A. R., Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter. At the 1933 D. A. R. convention at Washington she was a page, and at the 1934 convention personal page to the librarian general.

Mrs. Cabell is a member of the D. A. R., Army and navy Chapter, Washington.

SML Comment: Picture from Morgan Benson. EDITH MORGAN. Born Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 1 September 1894. Residence in August 1935 was Washington, DC. Mrs Cabell is a member of the DAR, Army and Navy Chapter in Washington, DC. She married then 2LT Derosey Carroll Cabell, Jr. son of Major General Derosey Carroll Cabell and Martha Otis, on 14 June 1916 at the USMA Chapel, West Point, New York. COL Cabell was born in San Diego, California, on 5 June 1893, and graduated from the US Military Academy, West Point, on 13 June 1916. He saw service in Mexico immediately after joining his regiment, the 10th Cavalry. He served in World War I, training soldiers in Camp Lewis, Washington, but did not get overseas until June 1919. In 1936, he transferred from the Cavalry to the Ordnance Corps, and became the first commander of Jefferson Proving Ground, Indiana. He was assigned to the Panama Canal Zone in 1938-1940, and during World War 2, he commanded an Ordnance Brigade in Utah, Oran, Algeria, and in France. He retired as a Colonel in 1945. He divorced Edith Morgan on 13 December 1946, and married (2nd marriage for both) Mary E. Hawkins Martin on 13 June 1947. Mary Elizabeth Hawkins was born on 8 June 1911 in Bedford, Indiana. Retiring to Florida, they lived in New Smyrna Beach, Florida for a number of years, then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Derosey Carroll Cabell Jr died in Indianapolis on 5 July 1966, and is buried in New Bedford, Indiana, the home town of his second wife. Mary Martin Cabell remarried after the death of Col. Cabell to Mr. Charles Campbell, and she died on 8 February 2000 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is buried at the Cresthaven Cemetery, Bedford, Indiana, next to Col. Cabell. Edith Morgan and Derosey Carroll Cabell Jr. had:

i. Virginia Cabell. She was born in Douglas, Arizona, on 15 June 1918. She married 2LT Wilmer Kersey Benson, Jr. on 13 May 1939 in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone. Colonel Benson retired from the US Army in June 1968, and started a second career with the US Atomic Energy Commission and retired from the US Department of Energy in June 1979. He was born on 2 November 1915 in the town of Wyoming, Delaware, and died on 19 July 1999 in Gaithersburg, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC, where he had lived for thirty years. He and Virginia had celebrated their sixtieth anniversary shortly before his death from heart failure. Virginia Benson is living in Gaithersburg, Maryland (as of June 2001). They had three children, the third being the provider of the supplemental information on the MASON-BROWNSON-MORGAN branch.

ii. Derosey Carroll Cabell III. Born on 30 August 1919 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He graduated from the US Military Academy in June 1944, and saw service in France and Germany during World War 2. He married Virginia "Ginia" Rubush in 1945. After the war, he pursued a military career in Army Aviation, and served in Vietnam during that war. He retired in 1974 as a Colonel, and worked for Bell Aviation in Iran until 1979, when the Iranian Revolution swept the country, and he was forced to flee with his wife. After many years flying privately, he retired to Aurora, Colorado, in 1985, and died there on 30 May 1998. He is buried in his wife's family plot in Wytheville, Virginia. Mrs. Virginia R. Cabell continues to live in Aurora, Colorado (June 2001). They had four children.

She married Maj. DeRosey Carroll Cabell Jr., son of Maj.-Gen. DeRosey Carroll Cabell & Martha Otis, on 14 Jun 1916 in Brooklyn, N. Y. Born San Diego, Calif., on 5 Jun 1893. Data from Mason.

Maj. Cabell graduated U. S. Military Academy, West Point, N. Y., June 13, 1916, and saw service in Mexico immediately after joining his regiment, the 10th Cav. He served in the World War but did not get overseas until June 1919, having most of his service on the border and about three months at Camp Lewis, Washington, training men.

They had the following children:

SML Comment: Picture from Morgan Benson. DOROTHY MORGAN. She was born on 27 March 1896 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. She married then 2nd Lieutenant Jonathan Waverly Anderson (born 7 June 1891) on 16 May 1915 at Fort Bliss, Texas. She died on 27 March 1987 at her home in New Hampshire, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her husband. Jonathan Waverly Anderson had a long military career, arising to the rank of Major General, and died on 13 June 1967. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Together, they had three children:

i. Dorothy Dulaney Anderson. Born 25 February 1916 in Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands. She married 2LT Andrew Jackson Goodpaster, Jr., USMA Class of 1939. He was born on 12 February 1915 in Illinois. He had a distinguished military career, and retired as General (4 stars) in 1976. He was recalled to active duty at the request of the President and served as Commandant at the US Military Academy, West Point, until his second retirement in 1980. He currently lives with his wife in Washington, DC (June 2001). They had two children.

ii. Jonathan W. Anderson, Jr. He was born 14 March 1920 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma (near Lawton, Oklahoma). He married Rosalind Zollar, and they had one child.

iii. Mary bachman Anderson. She was born on 3 October 1922, in Washington, DC. Affectionately known as "Sally" she married Colonel Freeman Waverly Bowley II on 11 Dec 1943 in Tampa, Florida. Colonel Bowley died 14 Jan 1983 in Amherst, Virginia. They had three children.
