Mr. and Mrs. Mason were members of the First Congregational Church at Bethel.

956. Sylvanus Mason Jr. (Sylvanus6, John5, Moses4, Daniel3, John2, Hugh1). Born Gilead, Maine, on 26 Jul 1824. Died West Bethel, Maine, on 16 Mar 1911. Residence: West Bethel, Maine. Data from Mason.

He was a farmer and carpenter and in 1861 was in the militia.
The following article was in the Bethel newspaper and was sent to me by Marshall Lynn Rolfe, grandson of Elizabeth Plummer Mason Rolfe.
"A large circle of relatives and friends mourn the death of Mr. Sylvanus Mason which occurred at his home in West Bethel, last Friday. He was born in Gilead, 87 years ago, on the farm now owned by M. M. Mason. He was the son of Sylvanus Mason, an influential man in Gilead and in comfortable circumstances, and their household was well known in that region. Seven boys were in that home, and all lived to grow up to manhood, namely, Woodsum, Sylvanus, Nahum, Artemas, Leland, Joseph, George, one daughter who died at the age of three years. All the family have passed away but three, namely, Artemas, Leland and George, and these were able to be present at the funeral.
"At the age of twenty-four years Sylvanus Mason married Isabelle Bean, daughter of the late Justus Bean of East Bethel. To this union were born three sons, Edward, Justus and Seth. Justus lives in Buckfield, Maine, Edward, near the old home, and Seth upon the old farm.
"Mr. Mason was a man of good habits, never known to have taken the name of God in vain, and was a very hard-working man. He lived long and well. After the death of Mr. Holt of Swan's Hill, the honorable cane, which was donated by the Boston Post to the oldest man in the town of Bethel, came to Mr. Mason.
"Mr. Mason was fortunate in possessing a sunny, cheerful disposition. You were always welcome in his presence. In 1869 Mr. Mason experienced religion, and connected himself with M. E. Church of Bethel, when the late Rev. Benjamin Foster was its pastor. In Mr. Mason's declining years he was tenderly cared for by his son, Seth, no sacrifice on his part was too dear, if it would minister to his comfort.
"Funeral services were at the old home, Rev. C. L. Banghart officiating. The burial took place in West Bethel. Tears cannot bring him back, but his memory lives and his loving and wise counsels to his loved ones will never be forgotten."
