Thaddeus W. Harris prepared for college at Dedham and Bridgewater, and in his sixteenth year, 1811, entered Harvard College, graduated 1815, A.B., and A.M. He did not long follow the medical profession for in 1831 he became librarian at Harvard and held that office until 1856.
Dr. Harris was best and most widely known as a Naturalist, standing in the front rank. In 1831 he prepared the Catalogue of Insects, a work of much importance in its day, it being the first systematic attempt made in this country to classify American insects. In 1837 he was in charge of the department of Natural History in Harvard and continued there for five years. Also, in 1837, he was appointed by the Legislature of the State of Massachusetts one of a commission for a scientific survey of the State, and in this connection he prepared his "Report on Insects Injurious to Vegetation" which was published at the charge of the State, in 1841, with revised and enlarged editions in 1852 and 1862. In 1840 he published a scientific list of native plants found in the vicinity of Boston. At his death his collection of insects passed into the hands of the Boston Society of Natural History. He was an Honorary Member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 1846, member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1848, Massachusetts Medical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Society for Promotion of Agriculture, Boston Society of Natural History, a corresponding member of Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, Pa., and of the London, England, Entomological Society. He was also interested in genealogical research, and at the time of his death left an unfinished genealogy of the Capt. Hugh Mason family which was copied by his son, Edward Doubleday Harris, and given to The New England Historical and Genealogical Society, Boston, and is now in their library.
