623. Seth Mason (Hugh5, Nehemiah4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Watertown, Mass., on 24 Nov 1790. Died Portland, Maine, on 19 Aug 1848. Baptized Portland, Maine, on 28 Apr 1816. Residence: Portland, Maine. Data from Mason.

Seth Mason was a brick mason, afterwards a grocer, and finally a botanic druggist. He was granted a license at Portland as a retailer, 1821, 1828, 1829, 1831, retailer and victualler 1825, 1826, 1837, victualler 1822, 1823, 1824, 1830. In 1832 he was licensed as "a Retailer with permission to sell spirituous liquors to be drank in his shop." His name appears in the first directory of Portland, published there, 1823, and in succeeding years until his death. Mrs. Mason's name appears 1850, but not after 1867.
In 1828 he purchased a church pew with his brother, Charles Mason, of which the following is the deed: "Know all Men by these Presents, That the Union Society in the Town of Portland, County of Cumberland, State of Maine, in consideration of ninety dollars and fifty cents paid by Seth Mason and Charles Mason, both of said Portland, Traders, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, do hereby bargain, sell and convey unto the said Seth and Charles, their heirs and assigns, Pew numbered one hundred and four on the Lower Floor, in the New Meeting House of said Society, standing on the corner of Casco and Cumberland Streets in said
Portland."
"April 5, 1828. (Signed) Samuel Small, Treas."
March 31, 1837, Seth Mason quitclaimed to "the Portland Mining and Railway Company, all rights, title and interest in his shares in all mines, minerals and coals of every description which may be found on Jewell's Island, so called, situated in Casco Bay, and which has been conveyed by Jonathan Chase to Seth Mason and others, by a deed dated July 8, 1833, also to all mines, minerals and coals at Cape Elizabeth, which has been conveyed to Seth Mason and William Coolidge."
In 1831 Seth Mason was one of a committee to sell four pews to his brother, Charles, in the meeting house, fronting Temple Street, commonly called the Christian Church.

624. Clark Mason (Hugh5, Nehemiah4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Marlborough, N. H., on 16 Apr 1794. Died Marlborough, N. H., on 12 Aug 1861. Residence: Richland, N. Y., and Marlborough, N. H. Data from Mason.

Clark Mason returned to Marlborough in 1827 and located on his father's farm where he remained until his death. March 24, 1834, he was listed as being taxed $6.75 toward repairing the old Meeting House. December 9, 1834, he subscribed $4.00 toward purchasing a bell for the meeting house, said bell to be divided into one hundred and ninety shares, estimated at $1.00 a share and to be the property of the subscribers. June 21, 1837, he and his wife were in the council which convened at the old meeting house, and by their action constituted the petitioners a church, to be known as the Baptist Church of Christ in Marlborough. At a meeting, June 6, 1837, be was chosen clerk and elected deacon.

He first married Eunice Adams, daughter of Jonathan Adams & Hannah Parkhurst, on 1 Jan 1817. Born Richland, N. Y., on 31 Dec 1795. Died Richland, N. Y., on 9 Jan 1826. Data from Mason.

Immediately after their marriage they started on an ox sled for what was then the far West, making the trip to Richland, Oswego Co., N. Y., in twenty-two days.

Charles Mason is listed on Portland records with his brother, Edward Mason, as buying land on the southeasterly side of Middle Street, October 25, 1826, again October 27, 1826, and conveying land near the meeting house of the Second Parish, October 27, 1826, and March 3, 1827, and buying land from his brother Edward and Ann Mason, his wife, February 21, 1829, and Charles and Temperance P. Mason sold land to Joseph Mason, January 7, 1831.
April 5, 1828, he purchased with his brother, Seth Mason, Pew 104, in the new meeting house of the Union Society, standing on the corner of Casco and Cumberland Streets. October 26, 1827, purchased Pew 36 in the same meeting house, and February 25, 1831, he purchased a pew in another church of which the following is the deed: "We, Nathaniel Crockett, Seth Mason, Samuel Pearson, Jacob Ham and Samuel Small, all of Portland, in the County of Cumberland, in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty six dollars and fifty cents to us paid by Charles Mason of Portland, in said County of Cumberland, the receipt whereof we hereby acknowledge, do hereby give, grant, bargain, sell and convey to the said Charles Mason and his heirs and assigns, the pews numbered 1, 18, 40 and 62, in the Meeting House in said Portland, fronting on Temple Street, which we have lately erected and designed as a house of public worship, for the religious. denomination and society commonly called the Christian Church, now worshipping therein."
On a quitclaim deed, recorded March 31, 1837, "Charles Mason and others quitclaim unto the Portland and Mining and Railway Company all rights, title and interest in our respective shares in all mines, minerals and coals' of every description which may be found on Jewell's Island so called, situated in Casco Bay, and which has been conveyed by Jonathan Chase to Seth Mason and others, by a deed dated July 8, 1833, also to all mines, minerals and coals at Cape Elizabeth, which has been conveyed to Seth Mason and William Coolidge."
Charles Mason was licensed as a victualler 1827, 1829, and his name appears in the first directory of Portland, 1823, and is last there 1834.
In Baltimore he was a member of the Home Guards of the Confederate Army, 1861, and carried a musket doing guard duty, but had no active service, owing to age.
