586. Samuel Mason (Joseph5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Dublin, N. H., on 29 Mar 1771. Died on 20 Oct 1822. Data from Mason.

In 1795, Samuel Mason bought the farm in Sullivan, N. H., where he built the house that stood at 4, about seventy rods south of the present house, and there his first five children were born. He was a cordwainer and made boots and shoes for his family and sometimes for his neighbors.
School tax collector 1799, collector 1803, constable 1803. August 23, 1805, he bought of his father, Joseph Mason, the place in Dublin (now Harrisville), where he was born, and moved there, where he was the third commander of the Grenadier Company.

He married Mary Willard, daughter of Rev. Elijah Willard & Mary Atherton, on 15 Oct 1795 in near Pottersville (now Chesham), N. H. Married by Rev. Elijah Willard, the bride's father. Born Harvard, Mass., on 9 Dec 1777. Died Dublin, N. H., on 30 Mar 1847. Data from Mason.

In 1797 Nathaniel Mason removed to Sullivan and operated a grist mill on land then owned by his father, Joseph Mason. March 4, 1835, he sold the mill to Lanmon Nims, who january 23, 1838, resold it to Nathaniel Prentiss Mason. Octover 8, 1802, he purchased a lot of his father and built the first house at East Sullivan Village. He was active in town affairs, serving as hogreeve 1801, highway surveyor 1808, 1819, school superintendent 1811, 1813, school tax collector, 1820, a member of the society for providing means for sustaining the church, its moderator 1840, and its trustee 1840, 1841.

He married Sarah Stone, daughter of Hezekiah Stone & Elizabeth Gooch Ballard, on 16 Jul 1800 in Pottersville, N. H. Married by Rev. Elijah Willard. Born Oxford, Mass., on 11 Mar 1780. Baptized Fitzwilliam, N. H., on 21 Oct 1781. Died Sullivan, N. H., on 20 Aug 1865. Data from Mason.

Joseph Mason was a farmer and cooper. He made many of the sap buckets which were used in Sullivan for many years. They were large and heavy as compared with modern sap pails, but very substantial and durable. He was a natural musician and played both clarinet and fife in the old militia company. His descendants are quite musical. He went to Sullivan in 1805, and for a time lived at 4, March 1806 he moved into the house at 50. At a subsequent period he built a two-story addition to this house, which was afterwards removed to Keene, and finally burned. He was highway surveyor 1810, 1814, 1822, school tax collector 1814.

He married Arethusa French, daughter of Joseph French & Ruth Farrar, on 5 Jun 1804 in Marlborough, N. H. Born Chelmsford, Mass., on 14 Sep 1778. Died Keene, N. H., on 30 Dec 1866. Data from Mason. 

SML Comment: A Family Bible gives the spelling of her first name and her grand-daughter's middle name as Arrathusa.
