Samuel Mason, while preparing for the ministry, worked at the trades of clothier and blacksmith. In 1837 he was settled as pastor of the church at Rockingham, Vt., then preached at Lempster, Washington and Kingston, all in New Hampshire, and moved to Newburyport, Mass., 1846.

He married Abigail Sawyer Whitcomb, daughter of Lieut. Asa Whitcomb & Rebecca Ball, in Cavendish, Vt. Born Alstead, N. H., on 6 Dec 1798. Died on 6 Dec 1852. Data from Mason.

Elijah Mason was licensed to preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1828, ordained deacon at Sandwich, Ct., and elder at Northfield, M. H. He organized the Methodist Episcopal Church at Bellows Falls, Vt., 1836, and was pastor at Rochester, N. H., 1841, and was specially active in the cause of temperance, holding temperance meetings at the schoolhouses. He was in the ministry for thirty-seven years.

He married Almira Bartlett, daughter of Stephen Bartlett & Phoebe Whittaker, on 19 Sep 1832 in Deering, N. H. Data from Mason.

Mr. Mason graduated Dartmouth College, 1839. He was a tutor in mathematics and Latin at Western Reserve College, Hudson, Ohio, 1839-1840, tutor at Dartmouth, 1842-1844, admitted to the Bar, Springfield, Ohio, May 1841, and at Woodstock, Vt., 1842, and settled in Boston, 1844, where he became a prominent lawyer. There he was a member of The National Historical Society, Old South Church and the Publicity Committee of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, October 1853 and December 1854.

He married Mary Lucretia Muzzey, daughter of Prof. Reuben Dimond Muzzey, on 25 May 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born Hanover, N. H., on 22 Nov 1821. Died Boston, Mass., on 19 Mar 1889. Data from Mason.

She taught Latin in the Hingham High School, 1888, and at Yonkers, N. Y., 1890-1891, and research assistant in chemistry and household economics at M. I. T. Instructor and assistant professor of chemistry at Smith College, 1894-1931, when she retired. Was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Smith.
