Mason entered the office of the New Hampshire Sentinel when a young man and learned the printer's trade, then went to Boston, subsequently to Georgia where he continued in the printing business until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he returned to Massachusetts. August 6, 1862, he enlisted in Co. K, 1st Mass. Infantry, reenlisted in 11th Mass. Regt. and served until the close of the war. He was promoted to 2nd Lieut. and for bravery in action, to Captain of Co. C, 11th Mass. Regt., and was wounded twice during service. Owing to his remarkable physical condition during the war he was christened "Old Tough and Healthy." He married Margaret (Barry) Driscoll, daughter of John (Barry) Driscoll & Margaret.
