273. Elijah Mason (Elias4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Woodstock, Conn., on 25 Jan 1754. Served in the Revolutionary War. Data from Mason.

Capt. Mason settled at Pomfret, Vt., being one of the founders of the town. He was present at the first town meeting held under the laws of New York, 1774, and was elected to two offices, collector and commissioner of highways. Constable 1780, 1781, selectman, 1783, 1785, moderator at three meetings of the Proprietors, chosen 1794 as member of committee to propose a petition to the next session of Assembly "that would settle a line between Pomfret and Woodstock." In 1783 he attained rank of Captain in the Pomfret Militia, and was thereafter known as Capt. Mason.
Serg't Elijah Mason on "Pay Roll of Capt. Edmund Hodges' Company for service done at Fort Fortitude, by order of Col. Jos. Safford, from the towns of Pomfret and Hartford, in October 1780." (Reference, Vermont Revolutionary Rolls, page 200.)
"Elijah Mason, Commander, for scouting up to the height of land near Pittsford to make discoveries of the enemy by order of Capt. John Throop." (Vt. Rev. Rolls, page 703, 704.)
While the Northern Army under Gen. Gates was engaged in the battles which ended October 16, 1777, in the capture of Gen. Burgoyne, Elijah Mason and other Pomfret men were employed to transport flour "from the Connecticut River to the Battenkill for the use of the Northern Army."
Capt. Mason was a carpenter and built the meeting house in Pomfret, erecting the frame in 1791, and was one of the original members of the church organized in Pomfret, 1783. He served on many important committees for town and church. In 1793 he owned 358 acres of land and was one of the largest tax payers. In 1799 he moved to Preble, N. Y., and there he was justice of the peace, deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church. Later he moved to Wethersfield, N. Y.

Leonard Mason served in Capt. Amos Paine's Co., service 16 days, on Lexington Alarm List. (Reference, Connecticut in the Revolution, page 622 and 27.)
Lieut. Mason took the oath of fidelity at a town meeting, September 1777, was an original member of the Woodstock Theft Detecting Society 1793, and deacon in the Woodstock Church. He was a tanner and currier.

Jonathan mason was at Bunker Hill, Cambridge, Boston, Providence, New London and Gtoyon, marched to Canada under Col. Arnold and was at the taking of Gen. Burgoyne in the Expedition to Quebec. He entered naval service and in 1779 and 1780 was on the privateer Queen of France in Capt. Whipple's Squadron.
He settled first at Woodstock, but in June 1783 moved to Lyme, N. H. Justice of the peace and a member of the New Hampshire Legislature for many years.

Soon after 1796 Charles Mason moved to Westford, N. Y., where he was captain in the militia, justice of the peace and a farmer. The first church in Westford was organized in his house.
