Daniel Mason (Nehemiah4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Watertown, Mass., on 15 Aug 1757. Baptized Cambridge, Mass., on 9 Oct 1757. Died Westbrook, Maine, on 9 Oct 1817. Buried Stroudwater Cemetery, Stroudwater, Maine. "Daniel Mason, Watertown, Mass., Private, Capt. Samuel Barnard's Co. of Militia, Col. Thomas Gardner's Reg't.; which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, service, 6 days; also Capt. Phineas Stearns' Co.; service 5 days; company marched from Watertown by order of General Washington to reinforce the Army at the time of taking Dorchester Heights in March 1776, also; receipt dated Watertown, July 17, 1776, for bounties paid Mason and others by Jonathan Brown, Town Treasurer, for enlisting as "Soldiers in the Defence of this Country." November 1778, Daniel Mason was "one of the nine raised to guard the prisoners at Cambridge, Mass."
November 29, 1931, Mrs. Luke Sturgis of Portland, Maine, and I (Mrs. Mason Pfizenmayer), great-great-granddaughters of Daniel Mason, visited the Stroudwater Cemetery and found his gravestone bearing the inscription
DANIEL MASON ESQ.
formerly of Watertown, Mass.
died October 9, 1817
age 60
and the stone of his youngest child, Nancy, inscribed
NANCY MASON
died December 31, 1814
age 20
in a state of perfect preservation.
At my request, Miss Luetta King of Portland, Maine, Registrar of Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter, daughters of the American Revolution, asked the Sons of the American Revolution of Portland to have a marker placed at Daniel Mason's grave to indicate the burial place of a Revolutionary soldier. May 7, 1932, the marker was placed at the grave by Miss King, Mr. Warren C. King, a member of S. A. R., and Mrs. Warren C. King, member of D. A. R.
Daniel Mason was active in town affairs, chosen assessor 1780, but "at his Desire was excused," Hogreeve 1780, Howard 1780, 1781, collector, 1781, 1784, highway surveyor 1784, assessor 1784, 1785, 1786, 1787, constable 1789, 1790, 1791, one of a committee to consult with the towns of Weston and Waltham respecting the lottery to be held to pay for the widening of the bridge 1786, one of a committee "to look after the Town's land and to sell and lease the same as may appear best for the Town" 1787, also when there was some difficulty with accounts between a collector and town treasurer, he was one of a committee to settle the affair. Selectman 1787, 1803, 1805, fence viewer 1791, one of a committee for finishing the Poor House, representative to the General Court 1804, 1806, chosen a member of the Cambridgeport Meetinghouse Corporation, June 15, 1805, which was to build a meetinghouse in the easterly part of Cambridge, and had three shares in what was known as the "Hundred Share Estate" in Cambridge. He was a tanner.

268. Hugh Mason (Nehemiah4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Watertown, Mass., on 23 Dec 1758. Baptized Cambridge, Mass., on 19 Jul 1761. Died Marlborough, N. H., on 25 Aug 1838. Baptized by Nathaniel Appleton. Residence: Watertown, Mass., and Marlborough, N. H. Served in the Revolutionary War. Data from Mason.

"Hugh Mason, Private, Capt. Joseph Fuller's Co. Col. Samuel Bullard's Reg't.; enlisted August 20, 1777, discharged November 29, 1777, service 3 mos. 10 days, at Stillwater, including travel (200 miles) home." (Reference, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in War of Revolution, Vol. X, page 321.)
In 1778 Hugh Mason received 3 pounds, I shilling, 8 pence from the town of Watertown for making cartridges, in 1786, 8 shillings for three large stones, and September 21, 1778, 20 pounds from Jonathan Brown for war service. He was active in town affairs, serving at Watertown as highway surveyor 1783, Howard 1786, 1789, 1790.
In 1793 he moved to Marlborough and settled on a farm and was the first to commence brick making within the limits of the town, having started in the business soon after his arrival, there being an abundance of clay in the immediate vicinity well adapted for this purpose. For a few years he manufactured a considerable quantity which found a ready market in Marlborough and neighboring towns. Also active in town affairs there, serving on the committee to re-district the town April 21, 1794, selectman 1796, 1797, 1815, 1816, 1817, 1822, moderator, 1798, 1812, 1815, 1820, 1823, town treasurer 1808.
September 22, 1795, the citizens of Marlborough formed a society known as The Marlborough Social Library, $2.00 being the price of each share, and of this he was a member. He was a man of good business talents and much respected by his fellow men, who embraced every opportunity to place him in positions of trust and responsibility.
