"Daniel Mason, Watertown, Mass., Private, Capt. Samuel Barnard's Co. of Militia, Col. Thomas Gardner's Reg't.; which marched on the Alarm of April 19, 1775, service, 6 days; also Capt. Phineas Stearns' Co.; service 5 days; company marched from Watertown by order of General Washington to reinforce the Army at the time of taking Dorchester Heights in March 1776, also; receipt dated Watertown, July 17, 1776, for bounties paid Mason and others by Jonathan Brown, Town Treasurer, for enlisting as "Soldiers in the Defence of this Country." November 1778, Daniel Mason was "one of the nine raised to guard the prisoners at Cambridge, Mass."
November 29, 1931, Mrs. Luke Sturgis of Portland, Maine, and I (Mrs. Mason Pfizenmayer), great-great-granddaughters of Daniel Mason, visited the Stroudwater Cemetery and found his gravestone bearing the inscription

and the stone of his youngest child, Nancy, inscribed
NANCY MASON
died December 31, 1814
age 20
in a state of perfect preservation.
At my request, Miss Luetta King of Portland, Maine, Registrar of Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter, daughters of the American Revolution, asked the Sons of the American Revolution of Portland to have a marker placed at Daniel Mason's grave to indicate the burial place of a Revolutionary soldier. May 7, 1932, the marker was placed at the grave by Miss King, Mr. Warren C. King, a member of S. A. R., and Mrs. Warren C. King, member of D. A. R.
Daniel Mason was active in town affairs, chosen assessor 1780, but "at his Desire was excused," Hogreeve 1780, Howard 1780, 1781, collector, 1781, 1784, highway surveyor 1784, assessor 1784, 1785, 1786, 1787, constable 1789, 1790, 1791, one of a committee to consult with the towns of Weston and Waltham respecting the lottery to be held to pay for the widening of the bridge 1786, one of a committee "to look after the Town's land and to sell and lease the same as may appear best for the Town" 1787, also when there was some difficulty with accounts between a collector and town treasurer, he was one of a committee to settle the affair. Selectman 1787, 1803, 1805, fence viewer 1791, one of a committee for finishing the Poor House, representative to the General Court 1804, 1806, chosen a member of the Cambridgeport Meetinghouse Corporation, June 15, 1805, which was to build a meetinghouse in the easterly part of Cambridge, and had three shares in what was known as the "Hundred Share Estate" in Cambridge. He was a tanner.

At the time of his marriage his father gave him lands on Grove Street, near Coolidge Hill Road in Watertown, on which he settled and where he was enrolled in the U. S. Census, 1790.

"Elijah Mason (also given as Elisha), Ashburnham, Descriptive list of men raised to reinforec the Continental Army for the term of six months, agreeable to resolve of June 5, 1780, returned as received of Justin Ely, Commissioner, by Maj. Peter harwood of 6th, Mass. Regt. at Springfield, July 2, 1780; age 19 years, stature 5 ft. 5 in.; complexion light, engaged for town of Ashburnham; arrived at Springfield July 1, 1780, marched to camp July 2, 1780, under command of Capt. Phineas Parker; also list of men raised for the 6 months service and returned by Brig.-Gen. Paterson as having passed muster in a return dated Camp Totoway, October 25, 1780; also, payroll for 6 months men raised by the town of Ashburnham for service in the Continental Army during 1780; marched to camp June 29, 1780; discharged December 4, 1780; served 5 mos. 26 days, including travel (200 miles) home." Elijah Mason setted first at Ashburnham, where he was a school teacher, he was chosen Hogreeve there, 1788, and a member of the School Committee, 1796. He moved to Walpole, N. H., about March 1, 1800, and while passing through Keene, N. H., noted the buildings draped in mourning for the death of George Washington, which had occurred December 14, 1799.

He married Hannah Bond, daughter of Job Bond & Deborah Frost, on 13 Sep 1787 in Ashburnham, Mass. Born Natick, Mass., on 30 Jul 1767. Died Walpole, N. H., on 11 Feb 1842. Data from Mason.
