Joseph Mason served in the French and Indian War, 1762, in the corps known as "Rogers' Rangers," which were retained in the field to watch the Indians. "Rogers' Rangers" was a famous coprs whose name was expressive of the life they led, ranging through the wilderness, seeking their wary Indian foe by day and by night, a coprs whose winter quarters were in tedious marchings amid drifted snows and frozen lakes, relying on snow shoes and skates and carrying their only arsenal and commissariat in their packs.
He was one of the company to meet the British troops on Lexington Common 1775. "Joseph mason, Corporal, in a detachment from Lexington Militia Co. commanded by Capt John parker; service 5 days; detachment reported on command at cambridge from May 6 to May 10, 1775, by order of Committee of Safety." (Reference, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, Vol. X, page 326.) He was also on Muster Roll of Capt. John Bridge's of Lexington Co. in Col. Eliezer Brooks' Reg't. on command at Roxbury from March 4, 1776, to March 8, 1776, inclusive.
He was a noted schoolmaster and active in town affairs, town clerk, 1770, 1790, 1795, town assessor, 1772, 1773, 1779, 1789, 1795.
