89. Benjamin Mason (Joseph3, Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Watertown, Mass., on 14 Jul 1717. Died Dublin, N. H., on 5 Jul 1801. Residence: Sherborn, Mass., and Dublin, N. H. Served in the Revolutionary War. Data from Mason.

Benjamin Mason first settled at Sherborn, but around 1764 or 1765 moved to Dublin, as at those dates his name appears as having worked on the roads. There he settled on Lot 14, Range 9, Monadnock, No. 3, and built a plank house at the top of the hill. He was a master carpenter and framed most of the houses erected in the neighborhood in his day, and at raisings and the like was distinguished for his agility, fearlessness and self possession.
At the first town meeting held at Dublin, 1771, he was chosen selectman; at a meeting of the Proprietors of Monadnock, No. 3, April 1773, chosen one of a committee to receive and examine the accounts brought against the Proprietary, March 4, 1774; appointed chairman of a committee of inspection to see that the Resolves of the Continental Congress be observed; listed as a voter 1770, and on the tax list of 1771. In 1777 he was admitted to the Church and being mucically inclined was one of the leaders of the choir singers.
"Benjamin Mason, private, 5th Co. N. H. On pay roll of Capt. Richard Weare's Co. in the 3rd Battalion of N. H. Forces commanded by Col. Alexander Scammell, enlisted January 22, 1777. Also fifer, on pay roll of Capt. Salmon Stone's Co. in Col. Nichols' Regt. of New Hampshire Militia, Enoch Hale, Colonel, which company marched from Rindge in said State July 1777, and joined the northern Continental Army at Bennington and Stillwater. Nehemiah Mason and his first wife are buried in Arlington Street Cemetery, Waterton, Lot 46, and the following inscriptions are on the head stones and their names are on the footstones, all of which were in a perfect state of preservation November 1934. His headstone, which is quite large and of the regulation slate used at that period, has a uniquely decorated border.

Nehemiah Mason's name appears on Rev. Mr. Seth Storer's list as having been "Admitted to Full Communion with Church of Christ in Watertown, November 8, 1741." June 1748 he was "seated in the hind Seat in the Long Galliery" of the church.
The next meeting of the Proprietors of Township No. 4, "lying between the rivers, Connecticut and Merrimac," after an interval of thirty years, was held at the house of Mr. Nathaniel Coolidge, innkeeper in Watertown, Deceomber 26, 1769. Nehemiah Mason Clerk.
The Township granted Joshua Fuller and others, June 11, 1771, in lieu of the Township granted in 1736, had now been reviewed and a plan made of it, and the grant had been confirmed by the General Court in accordance with the plan presented. Nehemiah Mason was one of the Original Grantees of 1771, Lot 19-20, Range 6, Lor 7, Range 1, Lot 7, Range 2. This land was located in what is now Paris, Maine.
At a general Meeting of ye Freeholders and other Inhabitants of Watertown, June 8, 1772, he was chosen one of a committee to build a wharf. At another meeting, held at the house of Capt. Nathaniel Coolidge, July 21, 1772. Nehemiah Mason was chosen one of the committee to prosecute or defend any action or actions wherein the interests of the Proprietary might be concerned, with full power of substitution. His will is on record at Middlesex Co., Probate Office.

June 1748, Elias Mason was "seated in the hind seat in the Long Galliery," First Church of Christ at Watertown, and October 31, 1762, he was dismissed from that Church to the Church at Woodstock, ye First Society. In 1752 a new probate district was formed including Woodstock, and the privilege of recording land deeds was exercised, and the name of Elias Mason, Watertown, Mass., appears on the list as a new inhabitant, recording land purchase. He was one of those to whom, December 8, 1766, permission was given to build a "Sabba-Day House" near the church at the southeast corner of the graveyard. In 1772 he was appointed one of a committee to consider the erection of a workhouse, and at the town meeting, September 1777, took the Oath of Fidelity. In 1771 he went to Pomfret, Vt., and was chosen assessor there, and was moderator at the meeting of the Proprietors, held in John W. Dana's cabin, June 18, 1771. He was active there during the summer, then returned to Woodstock. Three of his sons served in the Revolutionary War.

According to the records of First Church of Christ, Watertown, "Ebenezer and Elizabeth Mason owned ye Covenant February 8, 1761."

Capt. Mason moved to Spencer in 1764. He was a tanner, currier and innholder; 1774 he built the house there which in 1841 was owned by his grandson, Joseph Mason, and opened it as a tavern which he kept for twnty years. He was active in town affairs, assessor 1770, 1773, 1774, town clerk 1779, 1780, 1783, 1784, 1785, and a firm friend to the Government during Shay's Insurrection, 1786, 1787.

"Josiah Mason, List of men attached to a warrant from Capt. John Walton to Sergt. Joseph Bates, dated August 4, 1777, directing him, in consequence of orders received from Col. Thatcher to warn the train band of said Walton's Co. to be ready at a moment's notice to march with 6 days' provisions, and to make return of deficiencies of equipments."
