23. Mary Mason (Joseph2, Hugh1). Born Watertown, Mass., on 2 May 1685. Died Watertown, Mass., in 1770. Data from Mason.

Bond's Info: MARY, b. May 2, 1685; m. THOMAS LEARNED, innholder, of Wat. [Learned, 42.] Vol. II: For May 2, 1685, read May 22, 1684.

She married Thomas Learned, son of Benoni Learned & Mary Fanning. Born Sherborn, Mass., on 11 Feb 1681. Died Watertown, Mass., on 22 Dec 1729. Residence: Watertown, Mass. Data from Mason.

Thomas Learned was a potter by trade, also a miller and bought the grist mill a few years before his death. He was first licensed as an innkeeper, June 3, 1712, and kept a tavern on the spot where the Spring Hotel was built many years ago, known as Learned's Tavern. After his death the tavern was continued by his widow until 1764, then by his son Abijah, and in 1770, by his son Bezaleel. He also was active in town affairs serving as constable and collector of taxes 1710-1712, selectman 1725-1729. His will, which was dated December 21, 1729, was proved January 12, 1730.

Bond's Info: THOMAS LEARNED, a potter by trade, m. MARY MASON. [Mason, 9.] He kept a tavern in Wat., licensed 1713, on the spot where the Spring Hotel was built several years ago, and which was very long known as Learned's Tavern. After his death it was continued by his wid. until 1769, and after that a few years by her son Bezaleel. He d. Dec. 22, 1729. Vol. II: Thomas Learned was first licensed as an innkeeper, June 30, 1712, and was selectman 1725 and 29. His real estate was apprized in 1732 by Samuel Jackson, [Col.] Ephraim Williams, and John Spring, all of Newton. His wid. continued to obtain a renewal of the icense until 1764. The next year her son Abijah obtained a license, and kept the house about two years, when he relinquished it to Benjamin Prentice, and moved to Cambridge. In 1770 the house was taken and kept about two years by another son, Bezaleel. Admin. on estate of wid. Mary Learned was granted May 1, 1770, to Bezaleel Learned; Abijah Learned, yeoman, of Camb., and Samuel Norcross, a brickmaker, of Camb., sureties. Her Inventory included the furniture of bar and bar-room.

Bond's Info: BENJAMIN, b. Jan. 15, 1713-14; d. 1743 7 unm. In his Will, dated Jan. 7,1736-7, he gave books and £100 to his youngest brother, Jonas, on condition that he should graduate at college; if not, this bequest to go to such other kinsman as should do so.

Joseph Mason and his wife are buried in Arlington Street Cemetery, Lot 49, Watertown. The following inscriptions are on their headstones and their names are on the footstones, all of which were in a perfect state of preservation October 1932.

Joseph Mason Jr. inherited the homestead and his name is on the list of those "that are Proprietors who are in Possession of the first Granted House Lots in Watertown." He was active in town affairs serving as tythingman 1715, fence viewer 1717, 1718, assessor 1719, 1720, 1722, 1723, 1724, 1725, 1726, 1737, town clerk 1722, 1723, 1724, 1725, 1726, 1727, 1728, 1730, 1731, town treasurer 1728, 1730, 1731, clerk of the proprietors of Watertown 1723, 1730, 1731, 1734, 1735, 1736, 1737, 1742, treasurer of ye Proprietors Committee of ye Common and Undivided Lands in Watertown 1728, on a committee to act in behalf of the Watertown Church for a legacy left it 1729, selectman 1729, 1732, 1734, 1739, 1740, 1741, 1742, 1743, 1745, 1746, 1747, 1749, 1750, 1752, 1753, chosen deacon of the church July 15, 1726, and at a meeting of the inhabitants of the eaterly precinct of 1729, chosen to be on the committee to seat the meeting house, and again in 1731, 1732. Representative to the General Court of Massachusetts, 1733, 1734, moderator 1734, 1735, 1737, 1742, at a general meeting of the freeholders and other inhabitants of the easterly precinct, March 8, 1735, he was elected precinct clerk and treasurer, again 1737, also one of a committee to manage ye prudentials of ye precinct ye present year, 1737, executor for the estate of William Shattuck Jr., 1737, engaged in settling other estates and justice of the peace. He was a farmer.
He was "seated in Side Gallery Pew in Watertown Meetinghouse June 1741," and owned the covenant October 10, 1742.

Bond's Info: JOSEPH, b. Oct. 2, 1688. JOSEPH MASON, a tanner, m. (pub. in Boston, June 26), in Stoughton, Sept. 14, 1710, by Rev. John Danforth, MARY MONK, dr. of Elias and Hope Monk, of that part of Dorchester which is now Stoughton. [Freelove, another dr of Elias Monk, b. May 2, 1704; m., Sept. 11, 1728, James Coolidge [143], of Sherburne.] He settled first in Boston, where his first two children were born, and after that returned to Watertown. He was Justice of the Peace, and town clerk, Rep. 1733 and 1734; was much engaged in conveyancing, settling estates, and in the municipal business of the town. His uncle John, of Newton, was his guardian after the death of his father. He d. July 6, 1755, and his wid. Mary d. Ap. 22; 1763, aged 72.

She first married Thomas Chamberlin Jr., son of Thomas Chamberlin & Elizabeth Hammond, on 22 Jun 1709 in Watertown, Mass. Born Cambridge, Mass., on 10 Sep 1683. Data from Mason.

She second married John Bond, son of Thomas Bond & Sarah Woolson, prior to 1720. Born Watertown, Mass., on 14 Jul 1695. Data from Mason.
