"I was born at or near Miltonvale, Kansas, March 12, 1888 and lived with my parents on a farm until the fall of 1890. When I was two and a half years old, we went to Vermont to visit my father's people. I can dimly remember Kansas as I saw it first. I remember the threshing machine and the buildings on the place where we lived. But when we came back from Vermont seven and it half years later, they were not the size I remembered them. During our stay in Vermont my brother Philip was born. Of course I remember Kansas well for I then stayed there with my parents until I was 21 years of age and worked on the farm and with threshing machine until I came here in 1909 and took up the homestead that has been my home ever since.
"Our school district was formed in 1916 and I was one of its first School Board Members. My wife, then Miss Elizabeth King, of Farmington, New Mexico, was the third teacher of our district.
"During 1918, July 15 to Sept. 15 1 was training in the Signal Corps at Colorado Springs and was then transferred to Aviation at Kelly Field, Texas until June 13, 1919.
"After returning home, I married Miss King and she has now lived in this school district for over 21 years as Mrs. Johnson.
"We have four girls. Our oldest, Genevieve (20) is keeping books for the Dunnigan Motor Company at Pagosa Springs. Elaine, our second ( 15) is in her third year High School at Farmington, New Mexico at present and the two younger girls Charlotte (~3) and Merilyn (6) are in country schools here at home.
"My mother is not very well. She is 73 and lives here at Pagosa. My brother Philip and family have moved to Denver since we wrote last."
