He was graduated from Oberlin College with an A.B. in 1843, and was an attorney in Elyria, Ohio, in 1850 (US Census 1850). He lived at the home of his cousin, Florence Nightingale Jones in Evanston, Illinois, the last five years of his life. The Edmund Abbott West Scholarship Fund of $1500 was founded in 1897 by Edmund Abbott West for Oberlin College students.
