v.  Charles Gordon. Born Northfield, Mass., on 4 Jul 1848. Died in Mar 1948. Buried Clinton, Mass.
He was graduated from Dartmouth College with the class of 1871, and is its oldest living alumnus in 1947. He was a Civil Engineer at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was in the lumber business at Traer, Iowa. He lived at St. Paul, Minn., in 1886; and retired and moved to Pasadena, Calif., in 1910. Early in the year 1939, the big wind, which blew down over 6,000 trees in Pasadena, blew down a big pepper tree in his back yard. The tree straddled, but did not damage his bedroom, which is in a small ell at the rear of his home, at 620 South Madison Avenue.
Before the first World War, he and a nephew, Douglas Walker, owned and operated a 75,000 acre ranch near Phoenix, Ariz., in which Charles had $75,000 invested. They had thousands of cattle and sheep also ranging in the Indian reservation. During the war, the Government urged them to raise more and more cattle and sheep, and when it ended, they found themselves much overstocked. They also had a great deal of wool in warehouse in Boston, which had been selling for 75 cents per pound, but which had to be liquidated for 23 cents. They also bad to liquidate the ranch and were left broke. Douglas Walker, being a Civil Engineer, got a job on the Los Angeles Colorado River aqueduct, and Charles Johnson at 75 got a job in a Los Angeles bank, where he remained until lie was 90.
In Pasadena, he made a hobby of gathering genealogical data of the descendants of John and Margery Johnson, of Roxbury, Mass.; and of the ancestors of Samuel Wright of County Essex in England, and his descendants in this country, of which Charles' mother was one. He corresponded with and collaborated with Frank L. Johnson, Johnson Family Genealogist, of Agawam, Mass. He loaned his books and manuscripts for use in compiling this manuscript and that of Frank L. Johnson.
In 1947 he was in good health and enjoying life in spite of his blindness. He works a half hour in his garden every morning. He also spends a great deal of time "reading" books (Phonograph records for the blind sent free by the Government), with very fine reproducer equipment, also furnished by the Government from the Congressional Library. He had just finished Winston Churchill's "Sweat, Blood and Tears," and quoted passages from it. He received many guests on his 99th birthday, July 4, 1947, at his home, 620 So. Madison Ave., Pasadena, Calif.
