Sixth Generation (Continued)

Family of Moses Johnson (131) & Sabillah Plympton

273. Simeon Johnson (Moses5, Joseph4, Nathaniel3, Humphrey2, John1). Born Holliston, Mass., on 22 Jun 1733. Died possibly Lansingbury, (Troy) N.Y., abt 1823.

Resided at Holliston and Sherborn, Mass., and Dublin, N.H., Was at Dublin, N.H. in 1771, and in 1819 removed to Keene, Ohio? He died after the Revolution.
Simeon and his wife's brother, Silas Stone, Jr. fought at the battle of Bunker Hill.
"It must not be forgotten that some who served from Dublin and credited to it, served from other towns, also at a late date; while still others entered the army from neighboring towns, or from an adjoining colony -- before removing to dublin and entering the army from that town. The tax lists and census reports show that there was an active movement and growth of population in Dublin and neighboring towns before, during and immediately after the Rev. period," Page 6 of "Early Dublin" by S. C. Derby, Columbus, Ohio.
Levi Leonard says, "Hearing of Leington, Benjamin Johnson, Silas Stone, Jr. etc., started on foot and walked 48 miles and reached Medford, Mass., the following morning and enlisted in the Company of Capt. Benjamin Bullard of Sherborn, and were at Bunker Hill, where the regiment suffered severely. His father (Elizabeth's father) Silas Stone, Sr., and his brother, John were both killed in the Revolution." "History of Dublin, N. H." 2nd Editions, p. 102
The Charter of Dublin, N.H. was granted in 1771 by George III. The township increased in population repidly from 1763. Its settlers came in considerably from Massachusetts: Sherborn, Natick, Medfield, Holliston, Framingham, Temple, Amherst, and elsewhere.
Also migration from Framingham 1713 to Oxford, to Hopkinton Dec. 13, 1717, to Holliston 1724, to Shrewsbury 1727, Templeton 1735, Utica, N.Y. after Rev. After the close of the French war, there was a numerous emigration from Mass. into N.H. The proprietors of the unsold lands in the southern townships offered strong inducements to young men to purchase farms and remove there.
Simeon, maybe, his sons and Adam surely (but several of them returned to Roxbury later) and possibly others of his family went after the Revolution to Ohio. A brief concept of why the movement to Ohio occurred at this time is given in "Northwest Occupied" Chapter XIV p. 280. "A meeting was held in Boston Mar. 1, 1786, to encourage old soldiers to go to Ohio -- there was a good response -- credits of service in the Revolution were accepted in payment for soil, 66 2/3 cents an acre, certificates 8 to 10 cents. Congress welcomed the idea of payment, for it was stripped for money. The ordinance had a conglomerate character because it had been worked over and over by Congress."
