| Grad. at West Point, 1837, served with distinction in Mexico as aid-de-camp to Brig. Gen. Hamer, was for a few years in U. S. service in California and Oregon, resigned his commission in 1853, and became a farmer in Sonora, on the Bay of San Francisco. At the breaking out of the Rebellion in 1861, he tendered his services to the Government, and was soon appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers, and later on account of his valor at the battle of Antietam, was made Major General. | ||||||||
