Family Group in First Reunion in 38 Years

8 Children Are With Mother First Time Since 1901

Mrs. Susan Freeman, 84, had her eight children together Tuesday for the first time since 1901. She had a host of friends to call and become acquainted with her sons and daughters. Mrs. Freeman could think of only one thing more she wanted. She wanted to see some of the survivors of a train wreck who shared hardships that seem adventures now.
It was in the Fall of 1880, Mrs. Freeman recalled, that she and her husband, the late George R. Freeman, left their home in Rutherford County, North Carolina, to come to Texas. En route, the train was wrecked. Passengers shared blankets, food and good cheer as they rode flat cars. A party of Baptist members accepted the courtesies of the Freemans and in appreciation helped to care for the four small tots. When the end of the tracks was reached, the Freemans went by wagon to Denton County to settle near Argyle.
After four years, the pioneers returned to North Carolina, but once having enjoyed a home in Texas, they were not satisfied until they returned in 1898, when they went to Texarkana to live. In 1901 the father died, and the children scattered, to be joined in a group with their mother this week for the first time since.
One daughter, Mrs. C. G. Sandlin, held open house Tuesday at her home, 3612 Gordon Avenue, where the mother also lives. Present were another daughter, Mrs. W. K. Reid of Fort Worth; a son, W. C. Freeman of Texarkana, and five sons and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Z. U. Freeman, Fort Worth; Mr. and Mrs. Aretus E. Freeman, Seattle; Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Freeman, Pasadena, Cal.; Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Freeman and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Freeman, all of Texarkana.
