James Martin LAWSON - b. July 2, 1868, Waynesboro, Wayne Co., TN; d. Apr. 10, 1958, Patton, San Bernardino Co., CA; bur. Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, WA [photo]. Son of Mordecai S. LAWSON and Elizabeth Caroline TURMAN. James died at Patton State Hospital at 10:03 pm, of bronchia pneumonia, arising due to age and arteriosclerosis. Lake View Cemetery records give his death date as Apr. 12, 1958 (which is the date his body was removed from CA), all LAWSON graves being in the S9 N15 E1/2 of Lot No. 943. Social Security No. 564 26 5788 (file confirms birth date, but gives birth place only as TN). Occupation was usually as a builder and mason. He was in Tecumseh, OK by 1896, living there at the time of the 1900 census of Tecumseh, OK. About 1901, he moved to Tucumcari, NM, and after a fire there moved to Seattle in 1908. James M. LAWSON was baptized at the Tucumcari Baptist Church on Jan. 4, 1904, and dismissed on Jan. 24, 1909. Except for two children who died in infancy (Carrie and Eugene), the entire LAWSON family appears in the 1910 census of Seattle, WA, residing at 1931 8th Ave. West. The LAWSON family moved to Muskogee, OK in 1916, living there until mid-1920. At the time 1920 census of Muskogee, OK, they lived at 626 Elgin Avenue. Family members recall that James was a Justice of the Peace while in Muskogee.

Employed at Sand Point Naval Station in the early 1920s, by Libby, MacNeil in Alaska in 1923, and as a mason in the Los Angeles area from the fall of 1923. James' masonry work can be seen at the homes of Marion DAVIES, Rudolph VALENTINO, and William Randolph HEARST. After a brief return to Seattle, James and Lucy separated and he returned to California, but he continued to support her and they visited one another several times until Lucy's death in 1951. In the 1930 census of Los Angeles Co., CA, he was a roomer at 1746 Flower St., Glendale, CA and a masonry contractor. One remembered address for James while in Los Angeles was 1435 Alvarado Terrace. An identification card issued by the Port of Los Angeles on 12 May 1943 bears his photo, signature and right index finger print, and gives the following data: Occupation - Retired; Place of Birth - Tennessee; Age - 74; Height 5-6; Wieght 135; Color Eyes - Gray; Color Hair - White. Before his hospitalization prior to death, he lived at 915 S. Alvarado St., Los Angles, CA, and was employed as a building serviceman by Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. A street in San Luis Obispo, CA bears the LAWSON name. James was a 3rd Degree Mason. He met Lucy Jane as a result of the piano lessons she gave, and they were married Oct. 22, 1895, Muscogee, I.T. by Rev. W. A. FREEMAN, Methodist minister of Hamburk, AR.
Lucy Jane FREEMAN - b. Sep. 12, 1871, Eldara, Pike Co., IL; d. May 13, 1951, Seattle, King Co., WA (2:10 pm). Buried in the LAWSON plot of Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, WA [photo]. Lucy was a charter member of the Tucumcari Baptist Church, and was employed in a millinery shop while in Tucumcari, NM. In the 1930 census of King Co., WA, Lucy was living at 4063 2nd Ave. NE, Seattle, WA, with her sons George and Don and daughter Ruth at home with her. She typed a one page Personal History on Nov. 5, 1931, and prepared her own Birth Certificate (signed before a Notary Public by her mother) and Family Record in Jan. 1941. Lucy noted the following Seattle addresses in a Bible given to her by son Clyde, but the order and dates are not known: 2946 Eastlake Ave., 1414 Seneca St., and 1717 12th Ave. #C-6. At the time of her death, Lucy lived at 706 23rd Ave. N., Seattle, WA. Last words: "Rest, child, rest." Daughter of Scott Cyrus Freeman and Malinda Margaret Sears.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy J. Lawson, 79 of 706 23rd Ave. N., who died Sunday, will be held at 11 o'clock tomorrow in the Butterworth Chapel, with burial in Lake View.
Mrs. Lawson had lived here for 44 years. She was born in Eldorado<sic>, Ill. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, James; five sons, Clyde F., James C., Donald V. Lawson, all of Seattle, George O. Lawson, Sacramento, and Thomas W. Lawson, Camden, Ark.; two daughters, Mrs. Monagen<sic> Williams and Mrs. Ruth Kurack, both of Seattle; two brothers, Richard and Melvin Freeman, both of Oklahoma, and 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A Delayed Birth Certificate was filed Oct. 11, 1954, supported by an affidavit of brother Clyde LAWSON, birth certificate of son Donald F. LAWSON, 1940 voter's registration, and 1942 Civil Service insurance policy copy. His death certificate gives carcinoma bronchogenis (8 mos.) as cause of death. Baptized at Seattle First Baptist Church. Residences: 1908-1915 Seattle, WA; 1916-1920 Muskogee, OK; 1921-1941 Seattle, WA; 1942-1950 Oak Harbor, WA; 1950-1959 Seattle, WA; 1960-1970 Vashon, WA; 1970-1974 Grants Pass, OR. Of the over 30 residences Don lived at after his marriage, he owned 9: two in Oak Harbor within a half mile of the High School; 16382 - 28th Place N. E., in Lake City Homes north of Seattle; 11100 - 59th Ave. So., on southeast Beacon Hill, Seattle; three on Vashon Island, at Tramp Harbor (Rt. 2, Box 392, Vashon), Quartermaster Harbor (Rt. 1 Box 77, Burton), and Vashon Heights (Rt. 1, Box 430, Vashon); across from Rogue River City, OR (5473 Rogue River Highway, Gold Hill); and a mobile home located at Grants Pass, OR (3764 Rogue River Highway, Space 8). In Jan. 1946, the Oak Harbor Farm Bureau News carried the following ad for his second owned home: "For Sale: four rooms and bath on 10 acres cleared land. City water, house unfinished $3,200 full price. Lawson's Place in Little Bellingham south of the high school." Don was employed as a laundry truck driver, WPA laborer, gardener, and department store salesman in the 1930s, as Ship's Service store manager at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station 1942-1950, and as storekeeper at Boeing 1951-1969 (Social Security No. 531 01 6560). Married Sep. 10, 1932, at the Freeman home, 2159 10th Ave. West, Seattle, WA, by Rev. E. A. Fridell, with Eva Freeman and Thomas W. Lawson, witnesses.

Donald V. Lawson, 64 <sic>, of 3764 Rogue River Highway died Wednesday (April 24, 1974) at Josephine General Hospital. Born Dec. 20, 1909 <sic>, in Seattle, Wash., he worked in management for Boeing Aircraft 20 years. He had lived here four years. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. Raymond J. Allen of First Baptist Church officiating and Slawson's Chapel of the Valley in charge. Survivors include the widow, Iva, Grants Pass; a daughter, Suanna Stewart, Springfield; three sons, Donald F., Port Angeles, Wash.; Stephen M., Edmonds, Wash.; and Charles A., San Francisco, Calif.; two brothers, George O., Sacramento, Calif., and Thomas W., Tigard; a sister, Ruth Kurack, Seattle, Wash.; nine grandchildren.
